The Wine Crescent is made from the following woods. Each is finished with a natural oil finish for a long lasting and natural luster

Paduak

Padauk (or padouk) is a name for any of a group of timbers from the Asian or African origin. Padauks are valued for their toughness, stability in use, and decorativeness, most having a reddish wood.

The padauk found most often in the trade is African padauk which, when freshly cut, is a very bright red but when exposed to sunlight fades over time to a warm brown. Padauks can be confused with rosewoods with whom they are somewhat related but as a general rule padauks are coarser and are somewhat less decorative in figure.

Kiaat

The Kiaat tree grows as tall as 45 feet, has dark brown bark and is topped with a high canopy of shiny compound leaves. The kiaat grows in the countries of Zimbabwe, northern Botswana, Mozambique, and Namibia and northwards into other parts of Africa

There are several uses for the wood of the kiaat. Since the wood does not swell or shrink much it is great for canoe building. Furniture and curios are often made from the yellow sapwood. This wood also produces a rich, resonant sound which is why it is made into many different musical instruments.

Curly Maple

Curly maple, also known as flamed maple, fiddleback or tiger stripe, is a feature of maple in which the growth of the wood fibers is distorted in an undulating pattern, producing wavy lines known as "flames". This effect is often mistakenly said to be part of the grain of the wood; it is more accurately called "figure", as the distortion is perpendicular to the grain direction.

Prized for its beautiful appearance, it is used frequently in the manufacturing of musical instruments, such as violins, and fine furniture. Another well-known use of the material is its use in electric guitars, especially the venerated Gibson Les Paul. The first models of the Les Paul, introduced in 1958 and 1959, known as the "Standard", sported a top of flame maple.

Goncalo Alves

also known as tigerwood, is a large canopy tree, sometimes reaching 120 feet in height in the natural rainforest, with a trunk 3 feet in diameter. Goncalo alves ranges in color from light to reddish brown to deep mahogany red-brown with a striking figure created by beautiful, bold, brown to nearly black irregular markings or striping. The texture is fine to medium and uniform, with a fine grain, varying from straight to interlocked and wavy. In spite of its high density, goncalo alves turns readily, carves well, finishes very smoothly, and takes a beautiful natural polish. The wood is rated highly durable and has strength values considerably higher than any well-known U.S. species. Among the most outstanding and attractive woods, goncalo alves is highly prized for its outstanding beauty.

Narra

Heartwood consists of light yellow, golden brown, reddish brown to red. Sapwood is a defined pale yellow or slightly white color. The hardwood, which is reddish, is termite resistant and rose-scented. The wood known in Indonesia as amboyna is finely sliced to produce an extremely decorative veneer, used for decoration and in making of furniture and keys on a marimba. The flower is used as a honey source while leaf infusions are used as shampoos. Both flowers and leaves were said to be eaten. The tree is recommended as an ornamental tree for avenues and is sometimes planted in Puerto Rico for as a shade and ornament. In folk medicine, it is used to combat tumors. This property might be due to an acidic polypeptide found in its leaves that inhibited growth of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells by disruption of cell and nuclear membranes. It is also known as a diuretic in Europe during the 16th and 18th centuries. Its reputation may be due to its wood infusions, which are fluorescent.

White Oak

This tree is native to eastern North America, from southern Quebec west to eastern Minnesota, and south to northern Florida and eastern Texas. Specimens are known to have lived over 600 years.

White Oak has served as the official state tree of Illinois since being selected by a vote of school children. The white oak is also the state tree of Connecticut and Maryland. One of the most famous White Oaks in America is the Charter Oak of Hartford, Connecticut, the subject of a legend nearly as old as the colony itself. The tree now makes up the reverse side of the Connecticut state quarter. White oak is sometimes presented in mythology as having mystical attributes, guarding against evil. Some vampire lore maintains that the stake that is used to dispatch a vampire must be made of white oak.
